Are You in the Way?

Have you ever been told that you were in the way?

When I was a kid, we had a floor model television.  My brothers and I would sit down in front of it and like all kids do, we would inch closer and closer until we practically had our noses on it.  And like parents do, one of mine would say “Hey, you kids are in the way.”

Sometimes we would get our toys and decide to play in the kitchen while my mother was cooking and once again we would be told “You are in the way.”

When my parents bought the house that they still live in, it was a fixer-upper, and that was OK because my Dad is a carpenter and can do things like that.  He spent years fixing up the house and while he was working my Dad would tell us to “watch out of the way”.  That was his favorite way of saying “Get out of the way.”

Sometimes we can’t even escape it as an adult.  I’m sure I’ve told my kids to “get out of the way.”  And, there probably isn’t a husband who hasn’t been in the way while his wife was trying to cook.

But, right now, the message is different.  God wants you to be in the Way.  And if you aren’t in the Way, he wants you to get in the Way.

“‘Let not your hearts be troubled.  Believe in God; believe also in me.  In my Father’s house are many rooms.  If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.  And you know the way to where I am going.’  Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we do not know where you are going.  How can we know the way?’  Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.'” – John 14:1-6

Jesus says that He is the Way!  He and the Father desire for us to be in the Way.

2 Peter 3:9 says that the Lord is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

God wants you to be in the Way, and this family of Christians wants you to be in the Way as well.

  1. Each time we come together to worship or study, we want you to be in the Way!
  2. When we fellowship together with a meal, we want you to be in the Way!
  3. When we conduct a VBS,  we want you to be in the Way!
  4. Our children need teachers who are in the Way and will teach them to be in the Way!
  5. Year after year, decade after decade and on into eternity, we want you to be in the Way!

The Lord’s church exists to make sure people get in the Way!  We beg and plead with you to get in the Way.  Yet, there are people who are not in the Way.

Looking back at our John 14, we see very clearly that Jesus is the Way.  This may sound simplistic, but until you get into Christ, you cannot be in the Way!

After that statement, the next reasonable question should be “How do I get into Christ?”  Why don’t we see what the apostle Paul had to say about that?

Paul reminds the Galatians that the number of people who have put on Christ is precisely and exactly equal to the number of people who have been baptized into Christ:

“For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ” – Galatians 3:27

I love the way that is worded.  When you “put on” your clothes, you are “in” your clothes.  To get “in” Christ, you must “put on” Christ, and Paul says that you do that through baptism.

Paul also reminds the Romans that the number of people who were baptized into Christ is precisely and exactly equal to the number of people who have been baptized into Christ’s death:

“Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?” – Romans 6:3

He then explains in verse 4 that baptism is how we obey Christ’s example of death, burial and resurrection:

“We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.” – Romans 6:4

God cannot be around sin.  So, if we want to be in the Way, we can’t do it with that sinful person we were.  Sin is death, so a sinful person is a dead person.  We must bury that person and let God resurrect that person as a new creation.  Look at verse 5:

“For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.” – Romans 6:5

The reverse of this verse is also true.  If we haven’t been planted in the likeness of His death we will also not be raised in the likeness of His resurrection.  If we are not raised in the likeness of His resurrection, we are not in the Way.

Recently I had one of the best days I can remember!  We are told that the angels rejoice over one sinner that repents.  That day they had five folks to rejoice over!  But, that’s not enough.  We need to keep those angels busy!

So, I ask, are you in the Way?  We’ve looked at scripture and seen that if you haven’t been baptized into Christ’s death then you aren’t in Christ…you aren’t in the Way.  I beg you, get in the Way right now.  The angels are waiting to rejoice, this family is waiting to accept, and God is waiting to forgive if you will just submit in faithful obedience to His Son.
